History
The Jeffrey K. Poilé Memorial Civil Rights Scholarship is part of McGeorge’s commitment to using the rule of law to bring about a more just society.
Jeffrey Poilé passed away in 1992 and was the life partner of faculty member Larry Levine. In 2001, former Dean Elizabeth Rindskoff Parker created this LGBTQ+-focused scholarship with seed money of $50,000. This scholarship commemorates a remarkable man whose life ended far too soon and provides support to students who are committed to using their legal education to extend and protect the civil rights of LGBTQ+ persons.
The first Poilé Scholarship of $1,250 was awarded to one student in 2002. Since then, the amount of financial aid provided to our students has grown remarkably due to the generosity of our donors. To date, we have awarded 222 scholarships for a grand total of $519,653. This academic year, we awarded 24 scholarships totaling $67,000.
Gifts from last year’s event helped the Poilé Scholarship endowment corpus to surpass $1.4 million. Dean Levine continues to work on growing the endowment to provide more support for McGeorge students and has set a goal is to raise $1 million, thereby nearly doubling the corpus. With tuition currently over $62,000 for full-time law students, these scholarships go a long way to helping our students alleviate the burden of financial worry and reduce their student loan debt allowing them to focus more on their studies. We need to do all we can to support the future lawyers who will be working to protect and expand LGBTQ+ rights thereby making our society fairer and more just.
