History
Jeffrey Poilé passed away in 1992 and was the life partner of faculty member Larry Levine. This scholarship commemorates a remarkable man whose life ended far too soon and provides support to students who are committed to using their legal education to extend and protect the civil rights of LGBTQ+ persons.
In 2002, we awarded the first $1,250 Poilé Scholarship to one student. Since then, we have awarded 198 scholarships for a grand total of $452,653 in financial aid due to the generosity of our donors. This year, we were able to award 22 scholarships totaling $70,500.
Gifts from last year’s event helped the Poilé Scholarship endowment corpus to surpass $1.25 million mark. Associate Dean Levine continues to work on growing the endowment to provide more support for McGeorge students and has set this year’s goal for the corpus to reach $1.3 million. Fortunately, there are still some funds available in the Powell Fund to match gifts to the Poilé Scholarship. With tuition currently at $62,678 for full-time law students, these scholarships go a long way to helping our students alleviate the burden of financial worry and reduce their student loan debt allowing them to focus more on their studies.
