History

Jeffrey Poilé passed away in 1992 and was the life partner of faculty member Larry Levine. This scholarship commemorates a remarkable man whose life ended far too soon and provides support to students who are committed to using their legal education to extend and protect the civil rights of LGBTQ+ persons.

In 2002, we awarded the first $1,250 Poilé Scholarship to one student. Since then, we have awarded 175 scholarships for a grand total of $376,953 in financial aid due to the generosity of our donors. This year, we were able to award 16 scholarships for a total of $48,400, of which $25,000 was made possible by the generous gift from the Sacramento Progressive Communities, established by the late Mark Whisler.

Gifts from last year’s event helped the Poilé Scholarship endowment corpus to surpass $1.17 million, well within reach of Associate Dean Levine’s goal for the endowment to reach $1.25 million. Thank you! Fortunately, gifts to the Poilé Scholarship are still being matched dollar for dollar by the Powell Fund until the fund is depleted. With tuition currently at $60,852 for full-time students, these scholarships go a long way to helping our students alleviate the burden of financial worry and reduce their student loan debt allowing them to focus more on their studies.
